Paolo Edera (C3M)
Design of self-healing and reprocessable materials, from the molecular interactions to the tailored mechanical performance.
In this talk I will present two examples of materials with tailored properties, both belonging to the class of Vitrimers : polymeric networks with covalent dynamic bonds [1].
The first one being an elastomer, whose self-healing properties at low temperatures (<100 °C) are accelerated by the use of an enzymatic catalyst [2].
The second one a high Tg Vitrimer (Tg ≈90°C), combining thermoset-like properties at room temperature and thermoplastic-like properties at processing temperatures [3].
I will discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying the mechanical properties, some typical problems linked to materials’ formulation, and the study of the linear rheological properties.
In this context rheology is used both to demonstrate the mechanical performance of the material and to have quantitative insight on the microscopic mechanisms governing the macroscopic properties.
