Abstract
Gelatine is extensively used in photographic industry. In this work, gelatine
was modified by adding a small amount of thermo-sensitive copolymer based on
PNIPAM containing low fraction of reactive units (Acrylic Acid). The crosslinking
reaction between gelatine and thermo-sensitive copolymer was studied as a function
of temperature. Crosslinking is effective only below the LCST (Lower Critical
Solution Temperature) when PNIPAM is soluble in water. At higher temperature
PNIPAM is under a compact globule conformation, which turns the reactivity off.
Decreasing of the temperature turns the reactivity on. After the formation of
the chemical gel, during the drying process, variation of the temperature around
the LCST leads to the creation of heterogeneities. Their presence accelerates
the drying process and improves the wetting properties.
