Mesoscale strategies of collective transport on deformable liquid interfaces

Transport at interfaces is crucial in multiple areas of physics and biology and is observed across a wide range of length scales. In the strategies used in such dynamics, the role of hydrodynamic interactions, interface deformations, and the presence of other agents at the interface provide the means to mediate interactions. These ingredients lead to rich behaviors, from segregations and enhanced diffusion to pattern formation. Given the experimental complexity of these systems, theoretical descriptions are a challenge that can be tackled by model systems.

In this presentation, by investigating the dynamics of two specific systems, namely sub-millimetric swimmers and memory-driven systems, we ask the question of which insights mesoscale transport strategies can provide to help understand active matter across scales. With swimmers, we will investigate the minimal requirement to allow for swimming at small length scales while accounting for the swimmer’s inertia [1]. With memory-driven systems, we will investigate the markovian-like diffusive dynamics that appear when increasing the time correlations in the equations of motion, focusing on both the diffusing agent [2] and the statistical properties of the memory kernel [3]. We will conclude this talk by comparing our findings to experimental systems at different scales."
