The Role of the Board of Directors

Established as an autonomous agency of the City of Paris, ESPCI is governed by a board of directors with broad authority.

In particular, it deliberates on:

• the institution’s strategic priorities;
• the budget and financial statements;
• organization and jobs;
• key scientific and educational projects;
• major real estate projects;
• the school’s partnerships and long-term commitments.

Governance that is Open to the School’s Ecosystem

The board of directors has 17 seats, nine of which are held by Paris city council members.

It also brings together representatives from the ministries responsible for higher education and research, academia, innovation, and industry, as well as representatives from ESPCI Alumni and engineering students.

The Chair of the Board of Directors

Mélody Tonolli

Elected chair of the ESPCI Board of Directors on June 15, 2026, Mélody Tonolli is the Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of universities, research, student life, the culture of knowledge, the knowledge economy, and coordination of the Scientific Council.

She also serves as the deputy councilor for urban planning for Paris’s 14th arrondissement.
