Study Abroad with ESPCI Paris – PSL

At ESPCI Paris – PSL, international mobility is an integral part of the curriculum. Whether through internships, research projects, academic programs, or a fourth year abroad, every engineering student can build international experience tailored to their academic path and career goals.

An international experience integrated into the curriculum

Through its network of academic and industrial partners, ESPCI offers its engineering students numerous opportunities for study, dual degrees, research projects, and internships abroad.

Every engineering student completes at least one international experience lasting more than two months during their program. This mandatory international experience may take the form of an internship, a research project, or an academic program.

The School’s partnerships enable engineering students to join universities, research laboratories, and companies around the world.

Opportunities for International Mobility

Earning a Dual Degree

Engineering students with strong academic performance may apply for a dual degree program at a partner university.

Duration: two years abroad, beginning at the end of the third year.

Degrees earned: an engineering degree from ESPCI Paris and an “Advanced Master’s in Sciences and Technology” awarded by the partner university.

Partner universities include:

  • in Japan: Doshisha University, in the fields of engineering and life sciences;
  • in China: Nanjing University and Tongji University, in physics, chemistry, and materials science;
  • in the United States: Georgetown University, in physics, economics, and political science;
  • In Canada: Negotiations are underway with Polytechnique Montréal.

Conduct a research project or complete an industrial internship

Engineering students can conduct their research projects and industrial internships abroad, in academic laboratories or at partner companies.

In particular, they are hosted by institutions such as Harvard, MIT, the Max Planck Institute, the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the universities of Tokyo and Kyoto.

Companies such as Michelin in the United States, Saint-Gobain in China, Nestlé in Switzerland, and Boehringer in Germany also host engineering students from ESPCI Paris – PSL.

Spending Your Senior Year Abroad

Each year, 10% of engineering students spend their fourth year abroad.

They can enroll in a specialized program in fields such as innovation, entrepreneurship, economics, or politics, or devote this year to a research project.

Host institutions include, among others, the universities of Cambridge, Georgetown, and Berkeley.

Writing a Thesis Under Joint Supervision

ESPCI Paris – PSL offers joint supervision agreements that allow students to prepare a dissertation in collaboration with a foreign institution.

These agreements include, among others, Hokkaido University in Japan, Tel Aviv University and the Technion in Israel, and Georgetown University in the United States.

Financial Assistance for Transportation Costs

There are several programs available to help students finance their study abroad experience:

  • Erasmus+, for study semesters and internships;
  • support for the international mobility of students in the Île-de-France region, with priority given to first-time mobility experiences;
  • the ESPCI Paris Fund, which helps finance student projects;
  • support from ESPCI alumni;
  • Scholarships from the Walter-Zellidja Foundation of the Academy of Sciences, intended in particular for joint-supervised doctoral dissertations.

An education with a global perspective

ESPCI Paris – PSL makes international mobility an essential part of its engineering students’ education.

These experiences allow them to enrich their scientific and academic journeys, discover other cultures and ways of working, and develop the intercultural skills essential to their future careers.
