72 women scientists to be honored on the Eiffel Tower soon

72 women scientists are symbolically making history with the upcoming inscription of their names on the Eiffel Tower. This unprecedented project aims to correct a historical omission: until now, only men’s names have appeared on the Parisian monument, even though it is a symbol of scientific progress.

Announced on January 26, 2026, and spearheaded by the City of Paris, the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel, and the Femmes & Sciences association, this initiative highlights women whose work has had a lasting impact on research, from the 18th century to the present day. The proposed list, which is currently provisional and undergoing validation, brings together scientists from a wide variety of disciplines: physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, computer science, astrophysics, and medical sciences.

Of these 72 women, six have strong ties to ESPCI Paris – PSL. Through a series of profiles, the School sought to highlight these inspiring figures on its social media platforms, in order to underscore the essential role women have played in the history of science and to foster scientific careers today and in the future.

The list of these 72 names will be forwarded to the three relevant Academies (Science, Medicine, and Technology), which will decide on the official and final approval of the names of the selected women scientists.
