Renewal of Vincent Croquette's Term of Office
Vincent Croquette has been reappointed as Director General of the École supérieure de physique et de chimie industrielles de la Ville de Paris for a second term. This appointment follows a remarkable period of growth and transformation for the institution.
Vincent Croquette says he is extremely happy and honored to continue his work at the helm of this prestigious school. He devoted his first term to making sweeping improvements to the school, modernizing its campus, and integrating ESPCI into PSL University—three goals that are particularly close to his heart.
He stated: “I am extremely grateful to the Ministry, the City of Paris, PSL, and the ESPCI Board of Directors for the trust they have placed in me by reappointing me as Director General. I am fully aware of this responsibility at a time when we must further strengthen our school in the face of the many challenges that lie ahead. The complete renovation of the campus aims to create a modern learning and research environment conducive to innovation. This is a project that is very close to my heart; following the construction of the building that will house the School’s laboratories, I am determined to see Phase 2 through to completion, which is set to begin in early 2024. “I am delighted to continue working with the driving forces behind ESPCI—its researchers, talented students, and dedicated teams.”
Under the leadership of Vincent Croquette, ESPCI Paris-PSL has strengthened its position within PSL University as a leading academic institution, training future engineers and researchers in the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology.
From Research to Leading a Major Institution of Higher Education Vincent Croquette is a physicist specializing in biophysics. Along with his colleagues, D. Bensimon and J.F. Allemand, he is one of the pioneers of methods for manipulating single molecules using magnetic tweezers. He began his career at the CEA’s Orme des Merisiers facility, then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, in the United States, and joined the Laboratory of Statistical Physics at ENS-PSL. In the 1990s, he shifted his research focus to biophysics to study biological molecules one by one. He was one of the pioneers of this field of research at ENS-PSL and has become an internationally recognized expert in the manipulation of single DNA molecules. He co-founded several startups, including Picotwist and Depixus, which in part build on the results of his research. A researcher-entrepreneur, he is also an engineer who graduated from ESPCI (Class of ’94).
